History
The GSEM Consortium emerged as a collaborative effort among several universities to promote research and discussion on global strategy and emerging markets. The consortium has organized annual conferences since 2016, bringing together scholars, doctoral students, and practitioners in fields such as international business, strategic management, cross-cultural management, technology strategy, and global entrepreneurship.
Key milestones in the GSEM Consortium's history:
1. 2016: The first GSEM conference was held in Miami, Florida, organized by the University of Miami CIBER (Center for International Business Education and Research). This inaugural event set the foundation for future collaborations.
2. 2017: The second conference took place in Boston, hosted by Northeastern University's Center for Emerging Markets (CEM).
3. 2018: The third version of the conference returned to Miami for its third iteration.
4. 2019: The University of Texas at Dallas Center for Global Business (CGB) hosted the fourth annual conference in Richardson, Texas.
5. 2020: Cornell University's Emerging Markets Institute (EMI) organized the fifth conference in Ithaca, New York.
6. 2022: The sixth conference was held in Vancouver, Canada, hosted by Simon Fraser University's Jack Austin Centre for Asia Pacific Business Studies.
7. 2023: The seventh GSEM conference was combined with the 8th Copenhagen Conference on Outward Investment from Emerging Economies (CPH OFDI) at Copenhagen Business School in Denmark.
Throughout its history, the GSEM Consortium has consistently involved key partner institutions:
- Northeastern University Center for Emerging Markets
- University of Texas at Dallas Center for Global Business
- Cornell University Emerging Markets Institute
- University of Miami Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER)
- Simon Fraser University Jack Austin Centre for Asia Pacific Business Studies
The GSEM conferences have featured keynote speeches, research presentations, "meet the editors" sessions, practitioner/policymaker panels, and networking opportunities.
They have also offered travel scholarships to PhD students to encourage participation from emerging scholars.
By rotating the conference location among partner institutions and collaborating with other related conferences (like the CPH OFDI), the GSEM Consortium has successfully created a global platform for discussing crucial issues related to global strategy and emerging markets.

The consortium's evolution reflects its commitment to fostering international academic collaboration and addressing the changing landscape of global business strategy.
